Man charged in stabbing at Dalhousie University homecoming riot

Halifax Regional Police have charged a man with aggravated assault in the stabbing of another man last year during a riot on Dalhousie University’s homecoming weekend.

Several thousand people had filled the streets and yards of homes during an unsanctioned party in the area of Jennings and Larch streets on Oct. 1 of 2022. Fire were lit, fireworks set off and fights broke out as some people clashed with police.

In the middle of the chaos, a 19-year-old man was stabbed. He was taken to hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

On Jan. 11 police had a suspect and asked for the public’s help in identifying him, and that resulted in officers going to New Brunswick and arresting a man in Moncton with the help of Codiac RCMP.

Austin Wambolt, 20, of Moncton, has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Wambolt is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court Nov. 27 for election and plea.

Dalhousie spokeswoman Janet Bryson said Wambolt has no known affiliation with the university.
