Man charged with impaired driving after tractor-trailer drags parked cars up Halifax street

The driver of a tractor-trailer has been charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving after he collided with half a dozen cars on Hanover Street in Halifax on Wednesday night.

Halifax Regional Police say the 35-year-old male driver was showing signs of impairment when police arrived and arrested him on the scene.

Hanover Street is a hilly residential street that ends at Barrington Street, across from the Irving Shipyard in Halifax’s north end.

The driver was released and is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date.

Witnesses on social media said the truck caught two parked cars underneath the trailer portion and then continued up the incline of the street, dragging those two and hitting four other parked vehicles before the truck drifted to the side of the road and pushed at least one vehicle into a power pole. The sound was loud enough to wake residents on the street.

The investigation is continuing.
