Palestinian flag to fly above New England capital’s city hall

Providence, Rhode Island, officials have approved a request to raise the Palestinian flag at City Hall on Friday. The decision comes as part of a broader initiative to celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the city. City officials clarified that the display of the Palestinian flag does not mean that American flags are being displaced. In fact, City Hall has previously flown flags from various countries to mark special occasions and highlight the contributions of different ethnic communities in Providence.

A spokesperson for the Providence City Council explained that the idea to raise the Palestinian flag came from the community, reflecting the significant role Palestinian-Americans play in the city’s diverse fabric. The decision to fly the flag was supported by Council President Rachel Miller, who will display it during the upcoming city council meeting and outside City Hall on Friday.

Democratic Mayor Brett Smiley’s office distanced itself from the decision, stating that it is within the city council’s jurisdiction to raise flags at City Hall. The spokesperson emphasized that the executive branch and City Council are separate entities in Providence.

Reports suggest that the Palestinian flag is becoming more visible at City Hall, where typically only state and national flags are flown. The decision to raise the Palestinian flag has sparked interest from various political figures, with Fox News Digital reaching out to Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Senate Armed Services Committee ranking member Jack Reed for comments.

The State Department was contacted to inquire about its stance on the flag debate amidst the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict. Additionally, Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., who represents a significant portion of the capital region, was also asked for a response.
