Man who died in Dartmouth fire remembered as cornerstone of Halifax’s gay community

Ronald (Ron) Dunphy, an 83-year-old retired social worker from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a house fire. Described as a kind and compassionate individual, Dunphy dedicated his career to helping children in the school system. His brother, Reg Dunphy, shared how Ron would go above and beyond to support families in need, providing assistance and gifts during the holiday season to children facing poverty.
Beyond his work as a social worker, Ron Dunphy was a beloved figure in Halifax’s gay community. He played a significant role in supporting and inspiring young gay men, including his brother Reg, who found confidence in expressing his true self with Ron’s encouragement. During the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, Ron was deeply affected by the loss of friends, showing his resilience and compassion in the face of tragedy.
The fire that claimed Ron Dunphy’s life broke out suddenly and spread rapidly through the home. His partner, Francis Anopuechi, bravely rescued him from the flames but suffered severe burns in the process and is currently in intensive care. An online fundraiser for Anopuechi highlighted Ron’s contributions to the community, including his involvement in organizing Halifax’s first Pride parade. Described as a cornerstone of the community, Ron’s impact on the city will be deeply missed.
In his final moments, Reg Dunphy was able to spend time with his brother in the hospital, expressing his love and gratitude for the positive impact Ron had on so many lives. Despite the tragic circumstances of his passing, Ron Dunphy’s legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to helping others will continue to inspire those who knew him. May his memory be a blessing to all who were touched by his generosity and warmth.
