Mandy Gull-Masty resigns as grand chief, announces run for Liberals in northern Quebec

Mandy Gull-Masty has been selected as the Liberal candidate for the Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou riding in the upcoming federal election. During a meeting of the Cree Nation Government, Gull-Masty tearfully announced her acceptance of the nomination, expressing her deep love for her nation and the commitment she has put into her work.
Gull-Masty made history in 2021 when she was elected as the first female Grand Chief of the Cree Nation Government in Quebec. Her platform focused on governance, language, culture, and economic development. Prior to this, she served as deputy chief of the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi, where she oversaw finance, administration, housing, and mining negotiation portfolios.
The Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou riding covers a vast area from Quebec’s northwestern border to Nunavik. The current representative for the riding is Bloc Québécois MP Sylvie Bérubé.
In an official statement, the Cree Nation Government acknowledged Gull-Masty’s resignation from her role as grand chief and expressed gratitude for her service to Eeyou Istchee. The government emphasized the importance of sending a strong and principled voice to Parliament to advocate for the region’s priorities.
Effective March 31, Deputy Grand Chief Norman A. Wapachee will step into the role of Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees and Cree Nation Government.
This announcement marks a significant transition in leadership for the Cree Nation, as Gull-Masty prepares to embark on a new chapter in federal politics. Her dedication to serving her community and advocating for their needs has been evident throughout her career, and she is poised to bring that same passion to her new role as a candidate for the Liberal party in the upcoming election.
