Ukraine-Russia war 3rd anniversary: EU leaders uneasy over US-Russia talks

On the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, European leaders are standing in solidarity with Kyiv while expressing concerns about the ongoing conflict and the involvement of President Donald Trump’s administration in negotiations. The recent election in Germany saw conservative leader Friedrich Merz emerge victorious, and he has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine.
Merz emphasized the importance of putting Ukraine in a position of strength, stating that the country under attack must be part of peace negotiations for a fair resolution. This sentiment was echoed by several European leaders and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who gathered in Kyiv to mark the anniversary of the invasion.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reaffirmed Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine, pledging humanitarian aid, protection for refugees, and military assistance as long as the illegal war persists. Steinmeier also expressed his commitment to participating in a video summit with other supportive nations led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
However, tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy have escalated in recent weeks, with Trump criticizing the Ukrainian leader and questioning his leadership. Zelenskyy, in turn, accused Trump of living in a Russian-made “disinformation space,” leading to public disagreements and strained relations between the two leaders.
The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, emphasized that any peace deal to end the conflict with Russia must involve Ukraine and Europe in the negotiations. She also raised concerns about pro-Russian positions taken by the Trump administration, highlighting the need for a unified approach to resolving the crisis.
European leaders, including Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Czech President Petr Pavel, reiterated their support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of safeguarding European values and alliances in the face of Russian aggression. They called for a united front in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and eventual integration into NATO.
As the U.N. General Assembly prepares to vote on resolutions addressing the conflict in Ukraine, the international community remains divided on the best approach to ending the war. While European nations have imposed new sanctions on Russia and continue to support Ukraine, there are ongoing efforts to engage with the U.S. in seeking a resolution to the conflict.
Overall, the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges and complexities of the conflict. It underscores the importance of international solidarity and cooperation in supporting Ukraine and working towards a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
