Marine veteran fighting PTSD with service dog program ‘transforming lives’

Marine veteran Anthony Longo knows firsthand the struggles that many veterans face long after leaving the battlefield. Having served in Fallujah, Iraq, and earning the Department of State’s Medal of Heroism in Afghanistan, Longo understands the toll that combat can take on a person’s mental health. That is why he founded the Warriors Choice Foundation in 2016, with the goal of helping his fellow veterans heal.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Longo explained that the foundation takes a personalized approach to treatment, eschewing a one-size-fits-all mentality in favor of tailored care. They offer counseling, wellness retreats, and a unique treatment known as “cognitive K9 rehabilitation.” Through this program, veterans are matched with Belgian Malinois service dogs that are specially trained to assist those suffering from PTSD and other combat-related mental health issues.
Since 2018, Warriors Choice has helped 72 veterans, with 46 of them being matched with their own service dog. Longo shared the story of a service dog named “Trump,” who was particularly impactful in the life of a 20-year special operations veteran. Longo described Trump as “the best” and admitted that it was difficult to part with him, but he feels blessed to have witnessed the positive impact the dog had on the veteran.
Longo himself has a K9 companion named “Bourbon,” who he credits with setting the tone for his own healing journey and laying the groundwork for the Warriors Choice K9 program. He emphasized the importance of the bond between handler and canine, noting that it instills a sense of responsibility and accountability in both parties.
Despite the daunting nature of combat-related mental health issues like PTSD and suicide, Longo stressed the urgency of addressing these issues within the veteran community. According to Warriors Choice, veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide, highlighting the critical need for effective treatment and support.
Longo encouraged any veteran struggling with PTSD to reach out for help, assuring them that Warriors Choice is ready and willing to assist in mapping out the best path forward. He emphasized the importance of supporting one another and providing a lifeline to those in need, drawing on his own experiences to guide and uplift his fellow veterans.
In conclusion, Longo expressed his dedication to the mission of Warriors Choice, stating that the success stories of veterans overcoming their struggles make all the effort worthwhile. By offering personalized care, innovative treatments, and unwavering support, Longo and the Warriors Choice Foundation are making a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans in need.
