Marineland remains closed in Niagara Falls, Ont., says it hasn’t decided if it will open this year

Niagara Falls, Ont. is gearing up for the busy summer tourist season, but there is uncertainty surrounding the opening of Marineland this year. The aquarium has not yet made a final decision on whether or not it will open its doors to visitors.

In an email statement to CBC Hamilton, Marineland’s marketing department stated, “no final decision has been made.” The park is currently in the midst of a sale process and transition to new ownership, with a focus on ensuring the long-term health and welfare of the animals.

As of now, Marineland’s main phone number is not working, its Facebook page has been taken down, and its website does not mention a reopening date. This is a stark contrast to previous years when the park would have already posted its reopening date by this time.

Janet Adams, an employment co-ordinator at the Niagara Employment Help Centre, noted that Marineland has scaled back its operations in recent years. While in the past it would hire 500 to 700 seasonal employees, last year it only hired a few janitors and cashiers. This year, there have been no summer positions posted, impacting students seeking employment opportunities.

Marineland has faced scrutiny in recent years, with Ontario’s Animal Welfare Services conducting investigations into the park. Since late 2019, 18 beluga whales, one killer whale, and one dolphin have died at Marineland. The park was found guilty under Ontario’s animal cruelty laws in 2024 for its care of three young black bears.

In an effort to secure funding for park operations and the eventual relocation of the animals, including more than two dozen beluga whales, Marineland has sold properties and received permission to sever and merge parcels. A lobbyist has also been working on obtaining permits for the international trade of endangered species and the export of cetaceans.

The future of Marineland remains uncertain as the park navigates ownership changes, animal welfare concerns, and operational challenges. Visitors and animal rights activists alike await further updates on the fate of this iconic attraction in Niagara Falls.
