Marjorie Taylor Greene swiftly serves up bill to rename Gulf of Mexico the ‘Gulf of America’
Following President-elect Donald Trump’s recent announcement about renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., wasted no time in introducing legislation to make the change a reality.
“The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name,” Trump exclaimed after revealing the decision to rename the body of water.
Greene swiftly declared her intention to introduce a bill to rename the Gulf, stating that she would file the measure on Thursday morning. The text of the proposal, which calls for updating federal documents and maps to reflect the new name, was released the same day.
“The Gulf of Mexico shall be known as the ‘Gulf of America,'” the proposal reads in part. Greene justified the change by highlighting the involvement of Mexican cartels in trafficking illegal goods through the Gulf, emphasizing the need for American protection and security in the region.
“The American people are responsible for safeguarding the maritime waterways for commerce and our armed forces defend the area from foreign military threats,” Greene asserted. “It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America, and that’s how the world should refer to it.”
Several other lawmakers expressed support for the renaming initiative, with Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., inviting people to visit the “Gulf of AMERICA” in his district and Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., proudly declaring his representation of Alabama’s First District on the “Gulf of America.”
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., also voiced his approval, noting the significance of the Gulf Coast for the country and affirming that the Gulf of America sounded appealing to him.
With Trump set to take office in less than two weeks, the potential renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America has sparked a wave of enthusiasm among supporters. The proposed legislation reflects a symbolic shift towards emphasizing American sovereignty and security in the region.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the debate over the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico will undoubtedly remain a topic of discussion in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
