Mark Carney to run for seat in Ottawa’s Nepean riding
Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced his intention to run in the Ottawa riding of Nepean in the upcoming federal election, as confirmed by the Liberal Party. In a statement released on social media platform X, the party emphasized Carney’s strong ties to Ottawa, where he raised his family, dedicated his career to public service, and actively contributed to his community.
The Nepean riding has been represented by Liberal MP Chandra Arya since 2015, but the party made the decision to remove him as their candidate. Arya, who had already been nominated to run for re-election, previously faced off against Carney in the Liberal leadership race. However, his nomination was revoked after he downplayed the importance of knowing French, sparking controversy within the party.
At 62 years old, Carney has never held elected office before. He recently assumed the role of prime minister after winning the Liberal leadership earlier this month. His decision to run in Nepean puts him in direct competition with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who is seeking an eighth term as MP in the neighboring riding of Carleton.
Sources have revealed that election day is set for April 28, with Carney expected to request the Governor General to dissolve Parliament on Sunday, officially kicking off the federal election campaign. Despite this, the campaign appears to already be in full swing, with all parties hosting events nationwide. Carney even joined forces with comedian Mike Myers in a new video posted on social media, showcasing a lighthearted approach to the campaign.
As the election season heats up, all eyes are on Carney as he embarks on his first foray into electoral politics. With his background in public service and strong ties to Ottawa, he aims to secure the support of Nepean residents and make a mark in the upcoming federal election.
