Massie rejects government funding measure Trump is urging Republicans to support

As the deadline to avert a partial government shutdown looms and President Donald Trump urges Republicans to support the passage of a funding measure, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., has made a bold declaration that he will oppose the proposal.

In a recent statement, Massie asserted, “Unless I get a lobotomy Monday that causes me to forget what I’ve witnessed the past 12 years, I’ll be a NO on the CR this week. It amazes me that my colleagues and many of the public fall for the lie that we will fight another day.”

President Trump has been actively pushing for Republicans to pass the funding measure, emphasizing the importance of avoiding a government shutdown. He took to social media to rally his party, stating, “The House and Senate have put together, under the circumstances, a very good funding Bill (‘CR’)! All Republicans should vote (Please!) YES next week.”

However, not all Republicans are on board with Massie’s stance. House Freedom Caucus chair Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., is in support of the funding measure, highlighting the necessity of keeping the government operational to advance President Trump’s agenda. Harris stated, “Congress must keep the government open so that DOGE can continue to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in our government. This continuing resolution is necessary to advance President Trump’s agenda. I fully support it.”

Massie, on the other hand, remains steadfast in his opposition, questioning the efficacy of continuing to fund programs that have been identified as sources of waste, fraud, and abuse. He expressed his frustration on social media, declaring, “Why would I vote to continue the waste fraud and abuse DOGE has found? We were told the CR in December would get us to March when we would fight. Here we are in March, punting again! WTFO.”

The proposed funding measure includes provisions to prevent a costly government shutdown, enhance defense investments, provide the largest pay raise for junior enlisted troops in over 40 years, and increase funding for air traffic control priorities. Additionally, it fully funds nutrition assistance programs for mothers, infants, and children, including a significant increase for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.

As the debate over the funding measure continues, it remains to be seen how Republicans will ultimately decide to proceed. With competing viewpoints within the party, the path forward in avoiding a government shutdown remains uncertain. Only time will tell how this contentious issue will be resolved.
