Matthew Gaudreau’s widow welcomes their first child

Widow of Late Hockey Coach Matthew Gaudreau Welcomes Baby Boy

Madeleine Gaudreau, the widow of former high school ice hockey coach Matthew Gaudreau, has announced the birth of their first child, a baby boy named Tripp Matthew. The joyous news comes four months after Matthew’s tragic death alongside his NHL star brother, Johnny Gaudreau.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Madeleine shared the arrival of baby Tripp, bringing a ray of hope amidst the darkness of losing her husband and brother-in-law in a devastating accident. Matthew, 29, and Johnny, 31, were fatally struck by a suspected drunken driver while riding bikes in New Jersey, just hours before they were to be groomsmen at their sister’s wedding.

At the joint funeral service for the brothers, Madeleine recalled how Matthew had tears in his eyes upon hearing Tripp’s heartbeat for the first time. She expressed how Matthew was destined to be a father and how his presence would always surround their son, even in his absence.

Both Matthew and Johnny were accomplished hockey players, having played together at Boston College before pursuing professional careers. Matthew had returned to coach at Gloucester Catholic High School, where the brothers had studied, while Johnny excelled in the NHL with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets.

The tragedy of their deaths led to an outpouring of support from the hockey community and beyond. A grand jury recently indicted Sean Higgins, the driver responsible for the fatal accident, on multiple charges including reckless vehicular homicide and aggravated manslaughter.

Higgins, through his defence attorney, expressed remorse for his actions that fateful night, attributing his poor decision to a moment of lapse. Despite arguments about the impact of his knee surgery on the sobriety test results, Higgins was ordered to stand trial by a Salem County judge due to concerns about his reckless driving and the tragic outcome.
