Maud Lewis painting valued at $25K among artwork appraised at Halifax event

A woman from Lawrencetown, N.S., recently attended a cross-Canada appraisal tour in Halifax, bringing along three paintings she inherited from her grandmother. These paintings were purchased from the renowned Nova Scotia artist Maud Lewis, with one of them, featuring a trio of fluffy black cats surrounded by vibrant flowers, being valued at an estimated $25,000.

The event, organized by Toronto-based art auctioneers Cowley Abbott, allowed participants to have their artwork appraised by specialists. Among the attendees was Paul Rogers from Bridgewater, who brought a painting he believed to be by Emily Carr, only to find out it wasn’t. Despite the disappointment, Rogers still appreciated the painting for what it was.

Another attendee, Harold Rennie from Halifax, brought in a painting by German artist Peter Dülberg that had been passed down through generations in his family. Rennie hoped to learn more about the painting’s origins to pass on to his son in the future.

Linda King, the woman from Lawrencetown, expressed her emotional connection to the paintings she inherited from her grandmother and stated that she had no intentions of selling them. For her, these paintings hold sentimental value and are a reminder of her grandmother’s admiration for Maud Lewis as a positive and talented artist.

The event in Halifax was part of a 12-city tour, providing art enthusiasts and collectors with the opportunity to gain insights into the value and history of their pieces. While some may have been disappointed by the appraisal results, like Paul Rogers, others, like Linda King and Harold Rennie, found fulfillment in learning more about the artworks they hold dear. The event highlighted the importance of preserving family heirlooms and the stories behind them, ensuring that future generations can appreciate and cherish these treasures.
