Maui surfer remains ‘happy, grateful’ after shark bite

MAUI, Hawai’i – Maui Man Expresses Gratitude After Shark Attack
After a harrowing experience that left him with a partial leg amputation due to a shark bite, 61-year-old Wailuku resident Kenji Nonaka is now out of the hospital and expressing his deep appreciation for those who saved his life and supported him during his recovery.
Nonaka was attacked by a shark while surfing at Waiehu Beach Park, a popular spot known as “Sandpiles.” Despite the traumatic incident, Nonaka remains resilient and determined to continue pursuing his passion for surfing.
A seasoned surfer with over 40 years of experience, Nonaka refuses to let his injury deter him from getting back on his board once he is fully healed. “I don’t know how to say it, but I need surfing for my life,” Nonaka emphasized.
Surrounded by his beloved surfboard collection and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from friends, family, and even strangers, Nonaka expressed his gratitude through tears of joy. His wife, Tomoko, also echoed his sentiments, acknowledging the kindness and generosity shown to them during this challenging time.
Reflecting on the selfless actions of his friends who provided immediate assistance following the attack, Nonaka emphasized the importance of not venturing into the ocean alone. One friend even used a surfboard leash as a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding before first responders arrived.
The community rallied behind Nonaka by setting up a GoFundMe page that raised over $94,000 to help cover his medical expenses. The overwhelming support and compassion demonstrated by others have been instrumental in Nonaka’s recovery journey.
Despite the physical and emotional challenges he has faced, Nonaka remains grateful for the second chance at life and the opportunity to continue pursuing his passion. “I say thank you, everybody, for taking care of me. I’m so grateful. I’m a lucky guy,” Nonaka expressed.
As Nonaka continues his recovery process at home, he looks forward to returning to the waves with a renewed sense of appreciation for life and the unwavering support of his community.
