US Election 2024

Media personality Steve Hilton unleashes on ‘rejected’ Kamala Harris at campaign launch

California Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton has made it clear that he is not backing down from a potential challenge from former Vice President Kamala Harris in the race to succeed Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom. In a fiery speech in Huntington Beach, Hilton criticized Harris, calling her a “failed and rejected machine politician” from Washington who is seeking the governorship based on her identity rather than her ability.

Hilton’s remarks come in response to a Politico report suggesting that Harris is considering a run for governor, with aspirations of becoming the first Black woman to hold the position in California. Hilton dismissed this idea, emphasizing that leadership of the state should not be seen as a consolation prize for a politician with a questionable track record.

Despite the challenges posed by Harris’s potential candidacy, Hilton remains undeterred. He emphasized his commitment to the race, highlighting endorsements from prominent figures such as Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Rep. Kevin Kiley, and actor Jon Voight. Recent polling indicates that nearly half of likely voters in California would consider supporting a Republican candidate for governor, giving Hilton confidence in his chances.

If Harris decides to enter the race, she would join a crowded field on the Democratic side, including former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, former Rep. Katie Porter, and Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis. On the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is also vying for the opportunity to lead the state.

The dynamics of the California gubernatorial race are further complicated by the state’s jungle primary system, which could result in members of the same party facing off in the general election. Despite these challenges, Hilton remains resolute in his determination to defeat Harris if she chooses to run.

As California grapples with a range of issues, including fire recovery in Los Angeles, affordability concerns driving people to move out of the state, and potential energy production challenges following recent oil refinery closures, the outcome of the gubernatorial race will have significant implications for the state’s future.

It remains to be seen how Harris will respond to Hilton’s criticisms and whether she will ultimately throw her hat into the ring. As the race heats up, California voters will be closely watching to see which candidate emerges as the frontrunner in the contest to lead the Golden State.
