Medvedev clarifies Russia won’t provide nuclear weapons to Iran amid crisis

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has clarified that Moscow has no intention of supplying Iran with nuclear warheads, despite his earlier remarks suggesting otherwise. In response to President Donald Trump’s criticism, Medvedev emphasized that Russia, as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, would not engage in such actions.

In a post on X, Medvedev condemned the U.S. strike on Iran, stating that it failed to achieve its objectives. He also highlighted the importance of abiding by international agreements and preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. Medvedev, who now serves as the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia, reassured that Russia would not provide nuclear weapons to Iran.

Trump had called out Medvedev on Truth Social for his initial comments, questioning the seriousness of the remarks and emphasizing the need to address the issue promptly. Medvedev’s statements had raised concerns about the potential for other countries to assist Iran in advancing its nuclear program.

Andrea Sticker, the deputy director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ nonproliferation and biodefense program, dismissed Medvedev’s original claim as mere bravado. Sticker noted that no country, including allies like Pakistan or North Korea, would risk supplying Iran with nuclear weapons due to the repercussions from the United States.

The U.S. recently conducted strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting tensions between Israel and Iran. Trump announced a ceasefire between the two countries but expressed displeasure with both parties for alleged violations of the agreement. He criticized the ongoing conflict and emphasized the need for compliance with the ceasefire terms.
