Lantz Volunteer Fire Department appoints first female fire chief

Kensa Harris has broken barriers and made history by becoming the first female chief of the Lantz Volunteer Fire Department. Joining the department 14 years ago as one of only two female firefighters, Harris has faced challenges in a traditionally male-dominated field. However, her perseverance and dedication have not only earned her the respect of her colleagues but also made her a role model for young women in the community.

“I wanna do a good job,” Harris expressed. “I think being a fire chief in a volunteer organization comes with a lot of responsibility, but for me, my focus is making sure I do the job well and make the department my priority.”

Following the retirement of Kory Orchard, who held the position for five years, Harris stepped into the role of chief. Her appointment signifies a shift towards inclusivity and diversity within the department. Katelyn Oakes, a fellow firefighter, commended the decision to select Harris based on her skills and leadership qualities, hoping that it will inspire more women to volunteer with the department.

“It’s nice to see a female in such a leadership role and for little girls in the community, especially, to look up to her,” Oakes remarked. “Hopefully, we’ll get a few more females around here to outrank the boys and show them how it’s done.”

As the new chief, Harris faces various challenges, including the recruitment of new members and the pressing need for a new fire station. Despite these obstacles, she remains committed to ensuring the department meets the community’s needs and stays prepared for emergencies.

The Lantz Volunteer Fire Department currently has 30 members, with four women, including Harris. Looking ahead, Harris aims to increase female representation within the department and enhance emergency response capabilities with the anticipated arrival of a new truck by the end of the year or in 2026.
