Memorial service for Broadway star Gavin Creel on Dec. 2

Memorial Tribute Planned for Broadway Star Gavin Creel

A memorial tribute to the late Broadway star Gavin Creel is set to take place next Monday at the St. James Theatre, where he famously starred in “Into the Woods.” The event will also be livestreamed online for viewers in the U.S. and U.K.

Creel, who passed away on September 30 at the age of 48, will be honored by MCC Theater with livestreaming access on their YouTube channel in the U.S. at 4 p.m. EST (9 p.m. GMT), as well as by The Society of London Theatre for U.K. viewers at the same time.

The memorial at the St. James Theatre will be open to the public, with interested fans encouraged to email their name and contact information to gavincelebration@bespoketheatricals.com.

It is important to note that the memorial will not be available for viewing on-demand once it has concluded.

In addition to the memorial tribute, Broadway will also pay its respects to Creel by dimming all marquees on Tuesday, December 3 at 6:45 p.m. EST. This decision came after a public outcry when it was initially proposed to only partially dim the lights in his honor.

Gavin Creel was a highly respected Broadway performer, known for his Tony Award-winning role in “Hello, Dolly!” alongside Bette Midler, as well as his nominations for “Hair” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” He also received an Olivier Award for his performance in “The Book of Mormon.”

Creel’s passing shed light on the tradition of dimming marquee lights in honor of deceased theater figures. While prominent figures typically receive a full dimming of all Broadway theaters, lesser-known individuals may only have partial dimming. In Creel’s case, after a petition signed by over 23,000 people demanded all theaters participate in his honor, the decision was ultimately made for all 41 theaters to dim their lights.
