Meta unveils new AR glasses with heart rate monitoring

Meta has just unveiled its latest creation, the Aria Gen 2 augmented reality (AR) glasses, and they are truly a game-changer. These glasses are not your average smart specs – they are designed to push the boundaries of what is possible with AR and AI. While the Aria Gen 2 glasses are currently in research mode, they offer a glimpse into the future of consumer AR glasses.
The Aria Gen 2 features an impressive array of upgrades from its predecessor. With an advanced sensor suite that includes an RGB camera, 6DOF SLAM cameras, eye-tracking cameras, and spatial microphones, these glasses are at the forefront of sensor technology. One of the most innovative additions is a set of sensors embedded in the nosepad, including a PPG sensor for heart rate monitoring and a contact microphone to distinguish the wearer’s voice from others. These sensors open up new possibilities for research and development in AR applications.
Meta has also made significant advancements in on-device processing capabilities with their custom silicon, enabling local processing of SLAM, eye tracking, hand tracking, and speech recognition. This reduces latency and enhances the user experience. Despite these advanced features, the Aria Gen 2 remains lightweight at just 75 grams and offers six to eight hours of continuous use. The glasses also feature foldable arms for easy portability.
Audio interaction has been given special attention in this iteration, with high-quality open-ear, force-canceling speakers providing clear audio feedback. This enables researchers to explore user-in-the-loop system prototyping and develop more intuitive AR interfaces.
The Aria Gen 2 glasses are designed to push the boundaries of AR and artificial intelligence research across multiple domains. From machine perception to accessibility research to robotics and AI, these glasses offer endless possibilities for exploration and innovation.
While the Aria Gen 2 glasses are not yet available for consumer use, they offer a glimpse into the future of AR glasses. With potential health-focused features, improved navigation aids, and more intuitive interfaces, these glasses showcase the exciting potential of AR and AI integration in everyday eyewear.
As researchers continue to tinker with this technology, the possibilities for AR in our daily lives are endless. From health monitoring to improved navigation to assisting those with visual impairments, the future of AR glasses is looking brighter than ever. Who knows what amazing applications researchers will come up with next?
