Metro grocers are going on strike all over GTA
More than 3,700 Metro grocers across 27 stores in the GTA could soon be on the picket line if a deal isn’t reached by Wednesday, Unifor says.
Talks between the union and the Montreal-based company began on June 26.
Earlier in June, 100 percent of Unifor’s GTA local 414 members voted to strike if a deal can’t be reached.
In a press release on Thursday, Unifor National President Lana Payne cited “significant affordability challenges” and Metro’s record profits as reasons for seeking a new collective agreement.
In June, Payne told the Star that the grocery workers at Metro deserved to benefit from the company’s rising pandemic profits, in the same way as the company’s shareholders and executives.
Unifor said wages, benefits and “other monetary issues” are slowing progress in talks.
“At the negotiating table, we have three main priorities: fair pay for all employees; better access to enhanced benefits; and safer, stable working hours and full-time jobs,” said Gord Currie, Unifor’s local 414 president, in a June press release.
The strike deadline is set for Tuesday, July 18 at 11:59 p.m.
