Mexico may sue Google over Gulf of America change

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is considering legal action against Google after the tech giant renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Google Maps. Sheinbaum expressed her concerns about the name change, stating that the Gulf of Mexico has been internationally recognized for a long time.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change the name of the body of water, prompting Google to update its maps accordingly. While users in the United States will now see “Gulf of America” on Google Maps, users outside the U.S. and Mexico will still see both terms. Trump praised the name change, calling “Gulf of America” a beautiful and appropriate name.

Sheinbaum emphasized that the White House decree signed by Trump does not refer to the entire gulf, and she is urging Google to reconsider the name change. She stated that if necessary, her government will file a civil suit against Google over the issue.

In addition to Google, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also acknowledged the name change, updating its systems to reflect the new name. The FAA issued a charting notice confirming the update, along with the renaming of Mount McKinley in Alaska, previously known as Denali.

The controversy surrounding the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America continues to unfold, with Sheinbaum and her legal team closely monitoring the situation. The international community will be watching to see how this dispute between Mexico and Google ultimately plays out.
