Mexico president says U.S. tariffs on her country delayed for 1 month
Mexico President Sheinbaum and President Trump Delay Tariffs
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that American tariffs on her country have been postponed for a month following a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. The White House has confirmed this statement.
In a tweet, Sheinbaum stated, “Mexico will reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard immediately, to stop drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, in particular fentanyl.” She also mentioned that the United States has committed to working on stopping the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.
Sheinbaum emphasized that both countries will continue their dialogue, with teams beginning to work on security and commerce immediately.
Over the weekend, Trump had ordered a 25 per cent tariff on all Mexican goods, prompting Mexico to threaten retaliatory tariffs. However, just hours before the tariffs were set to take effect, Trump announced on social media that the tariffs on Mexican goods would be put on hold for a month for further negotiations.
