Mexico sues Google for changing ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America’ after Trump’s order

Mexico has taken legal action against Google for changing the label of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its maps platform. This decision was made to align with U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to modify the name of the body of water. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum made this announcement during a press briefing on Friday. She did not provide specific details but confirmed that the lawsuit had been filed against the tech giant.
This lawsuit follows Sheinbaum’s previous threat in February to sue Google over the name change. Mexico’s Foreign Relations Ministry had also sent letters to Google urging them not to rename the oceanic basin as the Gulf of America.
President Trump signed an order in January to rename the northern part of the gulf to the Gulf of America. It is important to note that this order only applies to the U.S. and does not have jurisdiction over Mexico or Cuba, who also share borders with the body of water.
Mexico argues that the Gulf of America label should only pertain to the portion over the U.S. continental shelf. According to Sovereign Limits, a database of international boundaries, the U.S. controls approximately 46% of the gulf, Mexico controls about 49%, and Cuba controls around 5%.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Google’s decision to change the name affects the continental shelves of Mexico and Cuba, which are not within the scope of Trump’s decree. The gulf is referred to as the Gulf of America within the U.S., the Gulf of Mexico in Mexico, and the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) elsewhere. The original name, Gulf of Mexico, has been in use for over 400 years.
Google Maps started using the term Gulf of America for users in the U.S. shortly after Trump’s order. The company stated that it follows the U.S. government’s lead on such matters and displays official local names in cases where there are variations between countries.
After Sheinbaum’s announcement of the lawsuit, House Republicans passed the Gulf of America Act in a 211-206 vote, which aims to formalize Trump’s order. The legislation will now move to the Senate for further consideration.
