Michigan fires offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell despite team’s upset win over Ohio State

The Michigan Wolverines pulled off a stunning upset on Saturday, defeating Ohio State on the road to extend their recent dominance in the rivalry. Despite the impressive win, Michigan made a significant coaching change that sent shockwaves through the college football world.

Offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell was relieved of his duties by head coach Sherrone Moore on Tuesday. The university issued a statement announcing that Moore would conduct a national search to find Campbell’s replacement. Tight ends coach Steve Casula was appointed as the interim offensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.

“After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction,” Moore explained in the statement. “This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football, and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors.”

Campbell had worked his way up the ranks within the Wolverines’ coaching staff, serving as the quarterbacks coach during the team’s national championship run in 2023. When Moore took over as head coach following Jim Harbaugh’s departure, Campbell was promoted to offensive coordinator. However, after just one season in the role, he was let go.

The Wolverines’ offense has struggled this season, ranking near the bottom of the NCAA in several key categories. They are 128th in yards per game, 125th in first downs per game, and 111th in points scored. Despite the challenges, Michigan managed to secure a 7-5 record after 12 games.

Michigan will now focus on finding a suitable replacement for Campbell, especially with the recent commitment flip of quarterback Bryce Underwood, the top-ranked prospect in the Class of 2025. The Wolverines will be looking to make a high-profile hire to help elevate their offense and compete at the highest level.
