US Election 2024

Mike Rogers in consideration for FBI chief after meeting in Mar-a-Lago with Trump transition team, sources say

Former FBI special agent and one-time Rep. Mike Rogers is making a comeback on the political scene. After narrowly losing the 2024 Republican Senate nomination in Michigan, Rogers met with President-elect Trump’s transition team to discuss the possibility of serving as FBI director in Trump’s second administration.

The meeting took place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. Rogers, who previously worked as a special agent in the FBI’s Chicago office and chaired the House Intelligence Committee during his time in Congress, was previously considered for the FBI director position in 2017 after James Comey was dismissed. However, Trump ultimately appointed Christopher Wray to the role.

Throughout his 2024 White House bid, Trump focused on cleaning house at the FBI, claiming that the bureau was filled with politically motivated and corrupt executives. While Wray was not a primary target of Trump’s criticism, he faced some scrutiny as well.

Sources familiar with the situation believe that Rogers would be a strong candidate for FBI director under Trump’s administration. With his experience in both the FBI and Congress, Rogers is seen as highly qualified for the position and could help restore integrity to the Department of Justice.

Rogers, a familiar face on cable news networks, briefly considered a run for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination before deciding to run for Senate in Michigan. Despite receiving Trump’s endorsement, he was narrowly defeated by Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin in the race to succeed Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

Another name being floated as a potential FBI director in Trump’s second administration is Kash Patel, a controversial aide who served in various roles during Trump’s first term. Patel’s background in national security and defense has garnered attention in media reports.

It remains to be seen how Trump’s allies and loyalists will shape the administration’s America First agenda in the coming years.
