Trump admin’s Ric Grenell puts ‘Hamilton’ musical star on notice for anti-Republican ‘publicity stunt’

The Kennedy Center, under the new leadership of President Richard Grenell, has found itself embroiled in controversy with Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda over the cancellation of a planned production of “Hamilton” due to the Trump administration’s policies. Grenell took to social media to criticize Miranda and “Hamilton” producer Jeffrey Seller for what he called a “publicity stunt” that discriminates against Republican voters.

In a joint statement to the New York Times, Miranda and Seller explained that they could not continue with the production at the Kennedy Center under the Trump administration, citing deep politicization of the national arts center. Seller claimed that Trump had taken away the Kennedy Center from the public, while Miranda expressed disappointment that the center was now only for Trump and his supporters.

Grenell fired back, accusing Miranda and Seller of targeting Republicans and being intolerant of those who do not agree with them politically. He labeled their actions as a publicity stunt that would ultimately backfire. Grenell emphasized that the arts should be for everyone, not just those who share Miranda’s beliefs.

The Kennedy Center has undergone significant changes since Trump appointed himself as chairman and Grenell as interim executive director. Trump’s vision for a “Golden Age of the Arts” includes focusing on popular productions that will attract audiences, such as a Christmas celebration in December. Grenell has promised to prioritize programming that sells tickets and pays for itself, given the center’s financial constraints.

Miranda, known for his outspoken criticism of the Trump administration in the past, has faced backlash for his decision to pull out of the Kennedy Center production. Conservatives have praised Grenell’s response to Miranda and Seller, applauding the focus on programming that appeals to a wider audience.

Despite the controversy, the Kennedy Center remains a prominent cultural institution in the U.S. under its new leadership. Grenell and Trump are committed to revitalizing the center and ensuring that it remains accessible to all Americans, regardless of their political beliefs. The clash between Grenell and Miranda highlights the intersection of art, politics, and public discourse in the current cultural landscape.
