Minneapolis City Councilman Jeremiah Ellison has sparked controversy by announcing that he will continue to receive his six-figure salary while accepting a full-time fellowship at Harvard University. Ellison, who is the son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, made the announcement on Wednesday.
Ellison’s decision has drawn criticism from his fellow councilmembers, who argue that he will not be able to fulfill his duties effectively if he is not present for meetings. Currently earning a salary of around $110,000 for his role on the council, Ellison’s fellowship at Harvard is a paid position.
“I am extremely disappointed in this, and I hope that my colleagues don’t allow this to happen — something to happen to North Minneapolis that is not good for them just once again,” council member LaTrisha Vetaw expressed during a press conference last month.
“Without Council member Ellison sitting on those committees, we have zero North Minneapolis representation on those committees. That’s not acceptable to the only other North side council member up here,” she added.
Attendance Concerns and Criticism

Ellison has stated that he plans to return twice a month to attend full city council meetings and will participate in his assigned committee meetings virtually, as reported by KSTP. However, council rules require members to be physically present to attend meetings and vote.
“I would like to know if there are other employees who are given that privilege,” councilmember Linea Palmisano told KSTP. “And, maybe, I don’t think they would ever be allowed that kind of a paid leave of absence.”
Controversial Statements and Past Actions

Ellison’s office has not responded to requests for comment from Fox News Digital. The councilman has been known for his radical left-leaning views, including declaring support for ANTIFA in 2020 and advocating for the dismantling of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Despite the controversy surrounding Ellison’s decision, he remains committed to balancing his responsibilities at Harvard with his role on the city council.
