Davita Ransomware Attack exposes 916,000 patient records and data

Healthcare institutions have become a favorite target for bad actors, largely because of how easy they make it for attackers. In June, researchers discovered a data break in health care that exposed the personal information of around 8 million patients. All this information was publicly accessible online without passwords or authentication protocols.

The newest care organization that falls victim to an infringement is Davita, who has endangered nearly a million people. Davita, with head office in Denver, Colorado, offers dialysis treatment to around 200,000 patients in the US and 13 other countries.

Kidney Dialysis giant Davita says that nearly 916,000 people had exposed personal and medical information in a ransomware attack in April (via Comparitech). The infringement that the company revealed in state applications, compromised names, sofi numbers, birth dates, health insurance, medical records, tax -ID numbers, addresses and even images of checks made to the company.

Davita says that the incident disrupted internal operations and has mainly influenced his laboratories. In his last notification to the victims, the company says that the cyber attack started on March 24, 2025 and continued until 12 April. It has not confirmed whether a ransom was paid.

Ransomware Gang Interlock claimed responsibility on 25 April, placing screenshots of alleged stolen documents and said that it cost 1.5 TB of Davita’s data. The group mentions the company on its public leksite, where the victims put pressure by threatening or releasing stolen files.

Davita offers eligible victims of infringements free identity restoring services via Experian, with a registration deadline of 28 November. The company has not confirmed how attackers gained access to its network or the size of the ransom demand.

Cyberguy reached for Davita for comment, but did not receive a response before publication.

Who is behind the infringement of Davita

Interlock, which first appeared in October 2024, claimed the responsibility for the Davita attack and at least 23 other ransomware attacks, plus dozens more that are not verified. Healthcare goals include Texas Digestive Specialists, Kettering Health and Naper Grove Vision Care, all of whom reported data breaches in 2025.

The Davita incident is the second largest US Healthcare Ransomware attack on number of records this year, behind the infringement of Frederick Health in January. According to Comparitech, there were 53 confirmed ransomware attacks on American care providers in 2025, which endangers more than 3.2 million patient records.

3. Use strong, unique passwords for each account

4. Register for an identity theft protection service

Davita offers free identity theft and credit monitoring services to those affected by the infringement. But even if you were not a victim of this specific infringement, it is still smart to protect yourself.

Identity theft protection services can warn you of suspicious activities, help you restore if your identity is stolen and often offer tools to freeze or lock your credit. This prevents fraudsters from opening new accounts in your name and you can temporarily lift the freezing when needed.

5. Switch two-factor authentication in (2FA)

Adding a second layer of login protection, such as an SMS message or app-based code via 2FA, can make it much more difficult for Davita attackers to gain access to your accounts, even if your password is exposed.

6. Check your credit and financial accounts

Keep an eye on strange costs or unknown accounts. Set notifications via your bank and view your credit report regularly to catch fraud early.

The investigation into the infringement of Davita is underway and the company has not announced how the hackers came in. Almost a million people are now confronted with the possibility that their personal information is used for malignant purposes. Ransomware attacks on hospitals and clinics can lock critical systems, postpone care reductions and return providers to paper files.
