Missing skier found dead near Sun Peaks resort in B.C. Interior
Tragic Death of 68-Year-Old Skier at Sun Peaks Resort
A tragic incident unfolded at Sun Peaks ski resort in Kamloops as 68-year-old Tomasz Jaholkowski was found dead after being reported missing on Dec. 10. Jaholkowski failed to return from a day on the slopes, sparking a search effort by RCMP.
The skier was last seen at the West Bowl Express chairlift, a new lift that transports skiers to a vast area on the resort’s boundary. It was on Dec. 12 that his lifeless body was discovered outside the ski-area boundary, leading to a somber conclusion to the search.
Authorities have ruled out any criminal activity in Jaholkowski’s death, with the B.C. Coroners Service being informed of the tragic incident. This marks a devastating loss for the skiing community at Sun Peaks.
Sun Peaks Resort spokesperson Christina Antoniak revealed that Jaholkowski was the third individual to go missing after using the newly opened ski lift this season. While the other two were quickly located alive, Jaholkowski’s fate took a tragic turn.
In response to the incident, the resort is reassessing its signage and markings intended to guide visitors on the boundaries of the ski area. The boundaries are currently marked with double ropes and signs cautioning against venturing out of bounds.
Sun Peaks emphasizes the importance of safety within the ski area, urging visitors to remain within bounds for their own well-being. Those who choose to explore off-piste are advised not to do so alone, to possess avalanche training, and to carry essential equipment such as a transceiver, shovel, probe, extra clothing, food, water, communication devices, and emergency supplies.
As the resort grapples with this tragedy, they expressed their condolences to Jaholkowski’s family and loved ones, offering support during this difficult time. Mountain recreation is a cherished pastime, and safety remains a top priority for all visitors at Sun Peaks.
