Missing Wall Street banker’s body washes ashore after beach vacation

The family of Grant Barr, a missing New York banker who disappeared while on vacation in Spain over a month ago, has confirmed that the remains that washed ashore belong to the 37-year-old. Grant’s father, Michael Barr, took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking news with friends and loved ones.

“It is with profound sadness that I speak of the passing of my youngest son Grant,” Michael Barr wrote in his post. Grant Barr was staying with friends and relatives in Estepona on the Costa del Sol when he vanished on Jan. 28. His pants and passport were found near a beach at a resort shortly after he was reported missing, prompting a massive search.

The Spanish Eye reported that Barr’s body washed up on a beach on March 3, but his family was not notified until April 4 when the remains were identified through DNA testing. Michael Barr expressed his grief and gratitude for the prayers and thoughts from those who knew and loved his son.

Grant Barr had traveled to Spain for a sailing getaway following a difficult breakup, according to his father. Michael Barr described his son as having a thirst for life, being a certified skydiver, and working towards his pilot’s license. Authorities initially ruled his cause of death as drowning, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.

James Barr, Grant’s brother, expressed frustration over the delay in notification and said that the family had been searching for weeks without knowing that his brother had already been found. Spain’s Guardia Civil and Policia Nacional have not commented on the case.

Grant Barr worked at The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation and had previously worked for Citibank. A spokesperson for BNY expressed their condolences to Barr’s family, stating that they would be supporting them during this difficult time. The U.S. Department of State also confirmed Barr’s passing and offered their sincerest condolences to the family.
