Mississippi town at heart of Sinners refused to be left out of the movie’s success

The town of Clarksdale, Mississippi, has long been considered the heart and soul of the movie Sinners. However, despite the film’s massive success at the box office, many residents were unable to see it due to the lack of a movie theatre in the town. That all changed this week when community members came together to organize a public screening of the film, featuring filmmaker Ryan Coogler and other members of the cast and crew.

Clarksdale, known as the “birthplace of blues,” is the setting for Sinners, a blues-infused vampire horror film starring Michael B. Jordan. The movie follows twin brothers as they strive to open a juke joint in Jim Crow-era Mississippi, facing violent opposition from both human and supernatural villains.

Business owner Dave Houston, who helped organize the event, expressed his excitement at the opportunity to showcase Clarksdale’s culture to a global audience. He highlighted the town’s rich history of juke joints and live music, which continues to thrive today.

Despite the fact that Sinners was filmed in Louisiana rather than Mississippi, the film’s portrayal of Clarksdale resonated with residents. Brenda Luckett, a retired teacher and local historian, felt it was important to acknowledge and celebrate the town’s contribution to the movie.

The initiative to bring a screening of Sinners to Clarksdale was led by Houston and community organizer Tyler Yarbrough, who penned an open letter and petition to Coogler and the cast and crew. The petition garnered thousands of signatures, prompting Coogler to visit the town for a series of screenings at the Clarksdale Civic Auditorium.

The screenings, which featured local vendors, food trucks, and live music, drew a large and enthusiastic crowd. Attendees, including Shelby Simes and theatre teacher Brandice Brown Williams, expressed their appreciation for the film’s homage to the Delta’s rich cultural heritage.

Coogler commended the people of Clarksdale for their organizing skills and entrepreneurial spirit, acknowledging the town’s potential for growth and investment. Houston, speaking from one of his businesses in Clarksdale, emphasized the town’s talent and resilience, envisioning a bright future ahead.

The successful screening of Sinners in Clarksdale not only brought the community together but also highlighted the town’s unique cultural identity. As Clarksdale looks towards the future, it is evident that the spirit of collaboration and creativity will continue to drive its growth and prosperity.
