Missouri lawmaker introduces bill $1K bounty to turn in illegal immigrants

Missouri State Senator-elect David Gregory recently introduced a controversial bill aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration in the state. The proposed legislation, Senate Bill 72, would offer a $1,000 reward to individuals who report illegal migrants to authorities, leading to their arrest.

Under the provisions of SB 72, the Department of Public Safety would establish an information system for reporting violations of the act, including a toll-free hotline, email, and online reporting portal. Additionally, the bill would create the “Missouri Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program,” allowing local citizens to serve as bounty hunters tasked with finding and detaining illegal immigrants. Only licensed bail bond agents and surety recovery agents would be eligible to participate in the program.

Furthermore, SB 72 would make it a felony for individuals to be present in Missouri as illegal migrants. Senator Gregory emphasized the importance of enforcing immigration laws to prevent violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants. He pledged to make Missouri a leader in combating illegal immigration and ensuring that law enforcement can apprehend illegal immigrants before they pose a threat to public safety.

The bill has sparked debate and drawn criticism from various quarters. Supporters argue that it is essential to uphold the rule of law and protect American citizens from the negative impacts of illegal immigration. However, opponents raise concerns about the potential for racial profiling, civil rights violations, and undermining trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement.

With President-elect Trump promising mass deportations in his second administration, the issue of illegal immigration remains a contentious and divisive topic. It is crucial for policymakers to strike a balance between enforcing immigration laws and upholding the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.
