Mixed Tales: Alberta Ballet performs a new story inspired by old fairy tales in Once Upon A Time

Once Upon A Time – A Thousand Stories: Alberta Ballet’s Magical Production
Francesco Ventriglia, the Artistic Director of Alberta Ballet, embarked on a creative journey a few years ago when he was commissioned to create a show based on a new score by the talented composer Alexey Shor. Shor, a former mathematician turned celebrated composer, had written a series of musical pieces inspired by classic fairy tales. Ventriglia saw the potential to weave these fairy tales together into a new and enchanting story.
Ventriglia assembled an international team and spent a significant amount of time crafting the show, which eventually premiered at the Dubai Opera as Once Upon A Time – A Thousand Stories. The success of the production led to an invitation for Alberta Ballet to perform at the prestigious opera house, making them the first Canadian ballet company to grace its stage.
The show, a fusion of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Swan Lake, Alice in Wonderland, and Aladdin, among others, follows the adventures of the prince’s best friend, the white rabbit, as he searches for the mysterious owner of a glass slipper. Along the way, he encounters a myriad of beloved fairy tale characters, leading to a joyous and magical wedding celebration.
Alberta Ballet’s commitment to reimagining classic tales has been evident in their recent productions, including The Wizard of Oz, The Grimm, Little Red Riding Hood, and Don Quixote. Ventriglia’s vision for Once Upon A Time – A Thousand Stories is one of refinement and elegance, with stunning handmade costumes designed by the renowned Roberta Guidi di Bagno.
The company’s talented dancers have embraced their roles, bringing beloved characters like Cinderella, Jasmine, Snow White, and Belle to life on stage. The production promises to be a feast for the eyes and a delight for audiences of all ages.
