MLB news: Kevin Gausman splits down stairs following ejection

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman had a tough day on the mound against the New York Yankees in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. Gausman struggled, allowing six runs and walking five batters before being pulled in the middle of a 53-pitch third inning. As he made his way back to the dugout, he was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Chris Conroy. To add insult to injury, Gausman took a tumble down the steps to the clubhouse in a heated moment.

“It was a frustrating inning for me,” Gausman told reporters after the game. “There were several pitches that I thought were strikes that weren’t called. It was even more frustrating to see the calls going the other way for the Yankees’ pitcher.”

Blue Jays manager John Schneider also found himself in hot water after arguing a called strike on Vladimir Guerrero Jr. during the game.

Gausman’s 53-pitch inning was one for the record books, marking the most pitches thrown by a pitcher in an inning since 2022. Prior to the game, Gausman held a solid 3.16 ERA, but his performance against the Yankees caused it to balloon to 4.50.

Despite Gausman’s struggles, the New York Yankees emerged victorious in the first game of the doubleheader with a score of 11-2. They continued their winning streak in Game 2 with a 5-1 victory.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It was a rough outing for Gausman and the Blue Jays, but they will have to regroup and bounce back in their next game. Stay tuned for more updates on Fox News Digital for the latest sports coverage.
