MLS news: Sounders’ Stefan Frei provides health update after scary collision

Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei was involved in a frightening collision during Sunday’s match against the Columbus Crew, resulting in him being taken off the field in an ambulance. The incident occurred during a 1-1 tie when Frei jumped to make a play on a free kick and collided with a Crew player’s knee upon landing. Players immediately signaled for assistance as Frei lay on the ground.

Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer confirmed that Frei was alert as he left the field and was being evaluated for head and neck injuries. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Schmetzer reassured fans that Frei was showing signs of movement in his fingers and did not sustain any major injuries.

Both Schmetzer and Crew coach Wilfried Nancy urged the referees to stop the match, with Nancy successfully convincing officials to call off the game even as Columbus was awarded a corner kick in the final moments. Frei later took to social media to update fans on his condition, expressing gratitude for the care he received and the outpouring of support from well-wishers.

The 39-year-old goalkeeper, who was born in Switzerland and moved to the U.S. as a teenager, has had a successful career with the Sounders since 2014. He was part of the MLS Cup-winning squads in 2016 and 2019, earning the MVP title in 2016 and an All-Star nod in 2017. Prior to joining Seattle, Frei played for Toronto FC from 2009 to 2013.

In his illustrious career, Frei has appeared in 425 matches, starting in 424 of them, with 343 appearances for the Sounders alone. During the match against the Crew, he achieved his 1,000th regular-season save, placing him among the league’s top goalkeepers. Only former Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando has more saves for a single team with 1,128.
