MMA could expand to P.E.I.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) has been steadily growing in popularity across North America for over 30 years, with a noticeable surge in interest in the Maritimes. This surge can be attributed to various factors, including federal legislation changes, a growing number of talented athletes and fans, and the success of local fighters like Jason Saggo.
Saggo, a Maritime MMA star who has competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), recently opened the PEI Martial Arts Academy in 2019. The gym has seen a significant increase in membership, with around 200 members currently enrolled. Saggo noted that many people train for the health benefits rather than to compete professionally. Due to the high demand, Saggo has expanded his gym to multiple locations across Prince Edward Island.
Despite the growing interest in MMA on the Island, amateur and professional competitive events are still not permitted due to the lack of a fight commission. However, there are plans to introduce new legislation that would allow for mixed martial arts competitions in P.E.I. in the near future.
In neighboring provinces like New Brunswick, the combat sport scene is more established, with the New Brunswick Combat Sport Commission overseeing official MMA events since 2015. Promotions like Fight League Atlantic (FLA) have been instrumental in promoting MMA in the region, showcasing local talent and providing a platform for fighters to compete.
FLA, co-founded by Jon Foster and Derek Clarke, has been hosting events in the Maritimes since 2020, with a focus on developing East Coast talent. The organization plans to expand into P.E.I. once a fight commission is established on the Island.
FLA’s last event of the year is scheduled to take place at the Moncton Coliseum on Nov. 17, with plans to continue growing and promoting MMA on the East Coast in the coming years. With a strong roster of homegrown talent and a dedicated fan base, MMA in the Maritimes is poised for further growth and success.
