Mohammadi, Iranian activist and Nobel prize winner, released from jail for medical treatment

Narges Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian activist known for her advocacy for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran, has had her prison term suspended in order to undergo medical treatment. Mohammadi, who is currently serving multiple sentences in Tehran’s Evin prison on charges including spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic, was granted a three-week suspension of her jail term to receive medical care following the removal of a tumor and a bone grafting operation.

According to her lawyer Mostafa Nili, Mohammadi’s release from Evin prison was approved by the office of Tehran’s Prosecutor based on the recommendation of a forensic doctor. The lawyer stated that Mohammadi’s physical condition required close monitoring and medical attention, as she had recently undergone surgery for the removal of a benign tumor and a bone grafting procedure. It was determined that she needed to undergo regular examinations every three months to ensure her well-being.

Narges Mohammadi gained international recognition when she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her three-decade-long activism in advocating for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. Despite facing imprisonment and persecution for her activism, Mohammadi has remained steadfast in her commitment to promoting human rights and social justice in her country.

The head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Joergen Watne Frydnes, expressed deep concern for Mohammadi’s health and urged the Iranian authorities to provide her with adequate medical treatment and to permanently end her imprisonment. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Mohammadi receives the necessary care to address her illnesses and alleviate her pain.

As Mohammadi continues her recovery and receives the necessary treatment, the international community stands in solidarity with her and all those who courageously advocate for justice and equality in Iran and beyond.
