Monday heat in Winnipeg breaks 67-year record

Record-Breaking Heat Wave Hits Winnipeg

On Monday, Winnipeg experienced record-breaking hot weather, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Southern Manitoba and southern Saskatchewan are currently in the midst of a heat wave, marking the first of the year in Canada. The temperature soared to 33.8°C near the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport at 3 p.m. on Monday, surpassing the previous record set in 1958 by one degree.

David Phillips, a climatologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, expressed his astonishment at the unusually high temperatures for this time of year. He mentioned that this could potentially be the hottest moment of the entire summer, despite there still being 40 days left. Typically, temperatures in Winnipeg should be around 19°C.

Several areas in Manitoba, including Steinbach, Portage la Prairie, Melita, and Emerson, also experienced new daytime highs on Sunday, as reported by Natalie Hasell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with ECCC. Historically, Manitoba only sees about half a day with temperatures exceeding 30°C.

ECCC has forecasted below-normal precipitation for Manitoba in the coming months of May, June, and July. The combination of hotter and drier conditions poses a significant challenge for farmers and wildfire prevention efforts. Phillips noted that Manitoba has received only a third of its normal precipitation for this time of year.

The climatologist warned that the situation could quickly turn deadly, citing data that indicates a higher likelihood of lives being lost during the initial seasonal heat waves in regions like Europe and North America. Phillips emphasized that wildfires are no longer just a warm-season phenomenon but a year-round battle that communities are facing.
