Months after a violent attack in Panama, Gatineau couple focuses on recovery

A couple from Gatineau, Que., is currently recovering from a traumatic incident that occurred in Panama at the end of October. Geneviève Plouffe and Martin Audette, who were in the midst of a long-term road trip across South and Central America, were attacked while inside their parked bus near the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal.

The assailants opened fire on the vehicle, dragged Audette out, and proceeded to beat him with a hammer and gun. Plouffe was threatened with her life as the attackers demanded money. The couple sustained physical injuries, with Audette still experiencing pain in his sternum and ribs, as well as scars on the back of his head.

The recovery process has been challenging for the couple, not only physically but mentally as well. They have been struggling with flashbacks and anxiety since the attack, making it a long journey towards healing. Despite the emotional toll, Audette believes that going through such hardships can ultimately make them stronger individuals.

In the pursuit of justice, the couple has incurred significant hospital and legal fees without insurance. They have sought assistance from Canadian consular officials in Panama and hired a lawyer to represent them in the case. Although suspects have been identified by local authorities, updates on the investigation have been sporadic.

Prior to returning to Canada, Plouffe and Audette sought help from a psychologist in El Salvador who specializes in post-traumatic stress disorder. They plan to continue receiving medical and psychological support in El Salvador before returning to Panama to retrieve their bus, which was damaged during the attack.

Ultimately, they remain resilient in the face of adversity and are determined to overcome the challenges they have faced on their journey.
