A New Rom-Com Set in Montreal’s Music Scene to Premiere at TIFF

A romantic comedy centered around a love triangle within Montreal’s vibrant music scene is set to make its world premiere at the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Mile End Kicks, directed by Toronto’s Chandler Levack, follows the story of a young music critic, portrayed by Barbie Ferreira, who relocates to Montreal in 2011 with the intention of writing a book on Alanis Morissette’s iconic album Jagged Little Pill.

However, her plans take an unexpected turn when she finds herself entangled in a romantic relationship with two members of a burgeoning indie rock band, ultimately deciding to take on the role of their publicist.

The film delves into the vibrant music scene of Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood, which has been instrumental in launching the careers of renowned acts such as Arcade Fire, Grimes, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Among the lineup of special presentations at TIFF, Mile End Kicks is joined by Steven Soderbergh’s The Christophers, a tale of siblings enlisting a forger to complete their late father’s artwork.

The highly anticipated festival, running from Sept. 4 to 14, will kick off with the premiere of John Candy: I Like Me, a documentary celebrating the life and legacy of the beloved Canadian comedian.

Other notable premieres at TIFF include Alejandro Amenabar’s The Captive, a captivating narrative chronicling the life of Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes.

Additionally, Hedda, directed by Nia DaCosta of The Marvels, offers a modern reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play Hedda Gabler, exploring the complexities of a loveless marriage.
