More municipalities offer drinking water, free showers for residents with dry wells

More municipalities in Nova Scotia offer free drinking water and showers for residents affected by the drought.
East Hants and West Hants join the regional municipality of Halifax, which would be announced on Wednesday to make drinking water available and free for residents with dry wells.
Norval Mitchell, a councilor of East Hants, says that residents from his district are concerned about low water levels.
“Some people have just not budgeted for extra water during the droughtstones, so it’s always good to help your neighbors,” he said.
The municipalities also recommend measures for water savings, such as reducing the length and frequency of showers and avoiding outdoor water use, such as watering lawns, wax vehicles or filling swimming pools.
“Everyone tries to get water and hopefully hopefully to drive out of the dry spell,” said Mitchell. “There is only so much water.”
Residents of East Hants can use the showers in the Aquatic Center in Elmsdale during normal business hours. They can also pick up drinking water by bringing hand containers to the same location.
Hours to receive drinkable water are in East Hants:
- Monday to Saturday: 10 am – 8 pm
- Sunday: 10 am – 5 pm
West Hants has 160 bottles of four liters of drinking water for immediate distribution, with an additional 960 jugs on Monday.
Residents can get two 4-liter bottles of drinking water per household on Sunday in the municipality of the district of West Hants Office, in Windsor, between 12:00 and 16:00
Hot, humid weather and lower than expected rainfall results in calls for some Nova Scotians to save water and some water reduction companies were thinly stretched. Gareth Hampshire has the story.
