Mother-daughter lawyers say it ‘means everything’ to be called to the bar together

Lori Butler and her daughter Megan Delaronde have made history by being called to the bar together in Ontario. The mother-daughter duo embarked on their legal journeys separately but ultimately ended up achieving this milestone side by side.

Delaronde graduated from York University’s Osgoode Hall in Toronto in 2023, while Butler graduated from the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Law in 2024. Their paths converged when Delaronde took longer to complete her final articling and bar exam preparation, allowing them to be officially admitted to the bar simultaneously.

This unique achievement caught the attention of the Law Society of Ontario, marking the first record of a mother and daughter duo being called to the bar together. Peter Wardle, the society’s treasurer, commended their inspiring journey and highlighted the importance of family support in pursuing a legal career.

While making history was a noteworthy accomplishment, both Butler and Delaronde emphasized that the real reward was seeing their hard work pay off. Delaronde expressed gratitude for her mother’s unwavering support and encouragement throughout the process, emphasizing that Butler’s determination was a driving force behind her decision to pursue law.

Their collaborative approach extended beyond emotional support, with Delaronde sharing study materials and answering her mother’s questions during law school. In return, Butler provided guidance and assistance when preparing for the bar exam, showcasing the strength of their bond and mutual respect.

Now officially licensed lawyers, Delaronde and Butler have wasted no time in diving into their respective legal careers. Delaronde has joined a criminal law firm in Kitchener, while Butler is working with a legal services team specializing in traffic tickets, criminal charges, and commercial vehicle offences.

Their unique perspectives and complementary skills make them a formidable team in the legal field. Delaronde’s compassion and quick thinking, combined with Butler’s experience and tenacity, position them well to make a positive impact in the courtroom. As they embark on this new chapter together, the mother-daughter duo is ready to uphold justice and advocate for those in need.
