‘Much prettier’ scaffolding will allow Halifax wine bar to open patio for 1st time in years

The popular Halifax wine bar, Obladee, is undergoing a transformation with the installation of new, more aesthetically pleasing scaffolding around its premises. This new scaffolding not only aims to be practical in protecting pedestrians from potential falling debris but also to create space for a summer patio that the business has been unable to utilize for the past two seasons.

The previous unsightly scaffolding, mandated by the municipality in 2023, hindered the visibility and accessibility of Obladee, resulting in a decline in business. However, the latest municipal order issued on May 9 has prompted the property owner, Caryi Group, to address building code violations and safety concerns identified in a recent engineering report.

Skyrise Scaffold, the company tasked with the project, is working on a design that not only meets safety requirements but also enhances the overall look of the structure. By covering steel shoring posts with black plywood and incorporating design elements to blend in with the building’s facade, the new scaffolding aims to seamlessly integrate into its surroundings at the corner of Barrington and Sackville streets.

Project manager and chief designer, Hywel Tyler, emphasized the complexity of the project due to additional engineering work, but assured that the end result will be a much more attractive and unobtrusive structure. The goal is for pedestrians to walk by without noticing the scaffolding unless they specifically look upwards.

Despite the challenges posed by the insolvency proceedings of Caryi Group, Obladee’s owners are optimistic about the project’s completion. Co-owner Heather Rankin expressed her excitement about the potential for increased visibility and improved customer experience once the new scaffolding is in place. The business has already submitted a patio permit for approval and is ready to install the patio once the necessary inspections are completed.

Overall, the new scaffolding project at Obladee Wine Bar represents a significant improvement in both safety and aesthetics, promising a more inviting and functional space for patrons to enjoy.
