Imam Muhsin Hendricks, the world’s first openly gay imam, tragically lost his life over the weekend in South Africa. Hendricks was shot and killed while traveling near the city of Gqeberha in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. Authorities are currently investigating whether this heinous act was a hate crime.
Hendricks, a pioneer in the LGBTQ+ Muslim community, founded the Inner Circle, a sanctuary for gay Muslims, after coming out in 1996. He bravely divorced his wife the same year he publicly acknowledged his sexuality. The Inner Circle has been a beacon of support and acceptance for gay Muslims around the world, promoting inclusivity and understanding within the Islamic faith.
The Cape Town Ulama Board, an organization of Sunni leaders, condemned Hendricks’ murder while clarifying that their beliefs do not align with his. They emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and maintaining peace within the community during this investigation.
The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) expressed their condolences and raised concerns that Hendricks’ killing may have been motivated by hate. Hendricks had been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights within the Muslim community, challenging traditional interpretations of Islamic teachings.
In 2022, Hendricks spoke out against a fatwa issued by the Muslim Judicial Council that condemned homosexuality as incompatible with Islam. He questioned the validity of such rulings, pointing out the historical context of LGBTQ+ identities in relation to religious scriptures.
