Musk’s political baggage: Polls show Americans sour on Trump’s most visible advisor

Elon Musk has been a prominent figure in President Donald Trump’s administration, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and making controversial decisions that have led to a significant decrease in the federal workforce. However, recent polling data shows that Musk’s approval ratings are plummeting, with a majority of Americans expressing unfavorable views of his work.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in late March and early April, Musk’s favorability rating stands at just 39%, with 57% of respondents viewing him unfavorably. Additionally, only 36% of Americans believe that the Trump administration is effectively reducing the number of federal employees without impacting essential services. Similarly, a Marquette Law School survey found that 41% of respondents approve of Musk’s work at DOGE, while 58% disapprove.

These polling results are consistent with earlier surveys that show Musk’s popularity on the decline. A Quinnipiac University poll revealed that 54% of Americans believe that Musk and DOGE are harming the country, while only 40% believe their efforts are beneficial. Similarly, a Fox News poll conducted in mid-March found that Musk’s approval rating was at 40%, with 58% disapproving of his work.

While Trump continues to praise Musk’s efforts, some Republicans are beginning to express concerns about his political liabilities. Democrats have seized on Musk as a target for political attacks, particularly following his involvement in a high-profile state supreme court election in Wisconsin. Despite Musk’s significant financial support for the conservative candidate in the race, the liberal-leaning candidate emerged victorious by a wide margin, in what was expected to be a close contest.

Musk’s controversial actions in Wisconsin, including handing out million-dollar checks to voters who had signed a petition opposing “activist judges,” have been criticized for contributing to the conservative candidate’s defeat. Despite these challenges, the White House has confirmed that Musk will be stepping back from his role with DOGE as planned later this spring, once his 130-day term as a “special government employee” comes to an end.

In conclusion, Elon Musk’s tenure at the helm of DOGE has been marked by significant controversy and declining approval ratings. As he prepares to transition out of his role, it remains to be seen how his legacy within the Trump administration will be remembered.
