N.S. announces new emergency department, dialysis unit for Cumberland County
Construction is soon to commence on the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre near Amherst, N.S., as plans are underway to expand the emergency department and establish a new renal dialysis unit by the end of 2027. The new emergency department is anticipated to be almost double the size of the existing one, capable of accommodating over 23,000 patients annually, as stated in a news release from Communications Nova Scotia.
Bethany McCormick, Nova Scotia Health’s vice-president of operations for the northern zone, emphasized the increasing demand for emergency care and services across the province. The enhanced facility will offer a modern space with a new layout, aiming to provide a more efficient experience for both patients and staff. McCormick highlighted that the upgraded department will facilitate quicker patient flow, deliver high-quality care, handle complex cases, and expand the healthcare team to promptly serve more patients and families.
In addition to the expanded emergency department, a new 12-station renal dialysis unit will replace the current temporary five-station unit at the Cumberland centre. This development is particularly welcomed by dialysis patient Michele Maltby-LeBlanc from nearby Nappan, N.S., who previously traveled to Moncton, N.B., for treatment over a decade. Maltby-LeBlanc expressed her excitement for the permanent unit, underscoring the convenience and necessity of having such services available locally.
The establishment of the new dialysis unit aligns with Nova Scotia Health’s commitment to providing comprehensive care closer to home. The modular dialysis unit at All Saints Hospital in Springhill, N.S., combined with the one at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, will collectively cater to up to 64 patients. Dr. Steven Soroka, senior medical director for the Nova Scotia Health renal program, highlighted the significance of keeping patients in their community and near their support network by enabling admitted patients to continue their dialysis within the hospital premises.
The final design phase is set to commence shortly, with the issuance of initial tenders expected in early 2025, leading to the start of construction in the spring. These developments reflect Nova Scotia Health’s ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and services to meet the evolving needs of the community.
