N.S. digging out after another winter storm

Nova Scotians are once again facing the daunting task of clearing snow and ice from their driveways and sidewalks, as a mix of snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain swept across the province on Sunday. This comes just days after a winter storm hit the region, causing school closures and treacherous road conditions.

In Halifax, residents were seen chipping away at the thick layer of ice that covered their properties on Monday morning. Reports of salt shortages spread online as people scrambled to stock up on supplies to combat the icy conditions.

Dylan Purchase, a local resident, shared his frustration with the recent weather events, recounting how his girlfriend’s car was totaled in a weather-related accident just last week. “It’s all black ice… so it makes it hard to get to work and stuff. It’s just been pretty chaotic,” Purchase said as he shoveled snow outside his home.

Meanwhile, Bruce Rands found an unconventional solution to breaking up the ice in his driveway – a practice golf club. “It’s proved quite effective at breaking up the ice,” Rands remarked as he swung the club with determination.

As if the icy conditions weren’t enough, power outages were reported across the province on Monday. Fortunately, by 2 p.m., the number of customers without power had dropped to less than 1,000. However, the inclement weather forced Marine Atlantic to cancel Monday night’s sailings between North Sydney, N.S., and Port aux Basques, N.L.

A wind warning was also issued for much of the province, with gusts of up to 90 km/h expected. Environment Canada advised residents to brace for strong winds, especially along the coast where the strongest gusts were predicted.
