Ferry service between P.E.I. and N.S. will be more reliable this season, CEO promises

Officials with Northumberland Ferries Ltd. are optimistic that this year’s ferry season will be more reliable and efficient compared to the previous year. The seasonal ferry service that operates between P.E.I. and Nova Scotia is set to kick off on May 1, featuring the addition of MV Northumberland to the fleet. This vessel, previously known as MV Fanafjord, was acquired by Transport Canada from Norwegian owners and boasts enhanced redundancy features, making it better equipped to handle any unforeseen mechanical issues.
Mark Wilson, the president and CEO of Northumberland Ferries, expressed confidence in the new vessel, stating that it is nearly as good as a new ship. With the addition of MV Northumberland, the ferry service aims to overcome the challenges it faced last season, which included the retirement of Holiday Island due to a fire incident and mechanical problems encountered by the remaining vessels.
Wilson emphasized the importance of having two operational boats this season to ensure a more dependable service. Both MV Confederation and MV Northumberland have undergone pre-season maintenance to guarantee smooth operations. Business leaders in eastern P.E.I. have stressed the significance of a reliable ferry service, as many businesses have resorted to using the Confederation Bridge instead of the ferry due to past uncertainties.
Blair Aitken, the president of the Eastern P.E.I. Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the crucial role of the ferry system in supporting the region’s economy and connecting communities on both sides of the Northumberland Strait. He emphasized the need for Northumberland Ferries to regain public confidence by delivering a season free of maintenance disruptions and adhering to a reliable schedule.
As the ferry season approaches, preparations are underway to address any outstanding issues, such as the tight fit of MV Northumberland at the Wood Islands dock. Modifications are being made to ensure a seamless docking process. Transport Canada is collaborating with the ferry operator to ensure that both vessels are ready for the season’s commencement.
MV Confederation is scheduled to start operating on May 1, with MV Northumberland joining the service in mid-June. During peak season, the ferry service will offer eight round trips per day. To introduce the new vessel to eastern P.E.I., MV Northumberland will be open to the public during the Doors Open Down East event on April 26 and 27. The ship will depart Wood Islands on April 27, embarking on its journey back to Nova Scotia.
With a renewed focus on reliability and efficiency, Northumberland Ferries Ltd. is optimistic about providing a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for passengers during this year’s ferry season.
