N.S. government says U.S. tariff threat ‘wakeup call’ as legislature opens

The Nova Scotia government delivered a sobering message in the recent throne speech, highlighting the imminent threat of tariffs by the United States and emphasizing the need for the province to diversify its economy and strengthen its resource sector. This call to action comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to impose significant tariffs on Canadian goods, which could have a detrimental impact on Nova Scotia’s agriculture, fishery, and manufacturing sectors.

In response to this looming threat, the Progressive Conservative government, led by Premier Tim Houston, is advocating for a shift towards a more independent, resilient, and resource-focused economy. The throne speech, delivered by Lt.-Gov. Mike Savage, outlined the government’s commitment to leveraging the province’s natural resources, such as hydrogen, offshore wind, and critical minerals, to drive economic growth. The government estimates that developing these resources could potentially add $16 billion to Nova Scotia’s economy.

To facilitate resource development, the government plans to introduce modern regulations that balance economic growth with environmental protection. Additionally, the speech emphasized the need to combat “special interests” that may hinder economic progress. The government expressed a firm stance against giving certain groups veto power over economic initiatives, with a focus on fostering unity within the province.

However, not everyone is on board with the government’s approach. Opposition NDP Leader Claudia Chender raised concerns about the government’s portrayal of “special interests” as obstacles to economic growth, cautioning against creating unnecessary conflict. Interim Liberal Leader Derek Mombourquette echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of supporting the entire economy and creating favorable conditions for businesses to thrive.
