US Election 2024

Massive fire union that remained neutral in election throws support behind Noem for DHS as Cali fires rage

As wildfires continue to ravage California, the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), the largest firefighter union in North America, has thrown its support behind South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem for the position of Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. This endorsement marks a significant departure from the union’s previous stance of remaining politically neutral during the 2024 election cycle.

In a letter addressed to Senators Rand Paul and Gary Peters, the respective chair and ranking member on the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, IAFF General President Edward Kelly expressed the union’s full support for Governor Noem’s nomination. Kelly highlighted Governor Noem’s understanding of emergency management and the importance of government response to both natural and manmade disasters. He also noted her broad support from law enforcement unions and called for her speedy confirmation.

The endorsement comes at a critical time as multiple fires rage through Los Angeles County, resulting in tragic deaths, widespread damage, and the evacuation of over 100,000 residents. The IAFF, which represents 353,000 members across the U.S. and Canada, emphasized the crucial role of public safety in government service and expressed their eagerness to collaborate with Governor Noem and the Department of Homeland Security in the future.

Governor Noem’s nomination process has gained momentum with the backing of various law enforcement unions and groups. At least eight police organizations have sent letters to Senator Paul urging a swift confirmation process for Noem. Among those organizations is the National Border Patrol Council, which represents thousands of Border Patrol agents and has voiced its support for Governor Noem to lead the DHS.

The urgency behind the IAFF’s endorsement of Governor Noem is underscored by the ongoing California wildfires and the need for a comprehensive and efficient government response to disasters. The union’s endorsement, along with the backing of other law enforcement groups, solidifies public safety support for Governor Noem as she heads into her Senate confirmation hearing on January 15.

Former President Trump, who nominated Governor Noem for the DHS position, praised her strong stance on border security and her collaboration with Border Czar Tom Homan. Trump highlighted Governor Noem’s efforts to secure the southern border and her commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the American homeland.

As Governor Noem prepares for her confirmation hearing, the calls for a swift confirmation process from various law enforcement unions and Republican governors like Jeff Landry of Louisiana underscore the importance of having a fully operational DHS leadership team in place to address emerging threats and ensure national security. With the support of key stakeholders in the law enforcement and firefighting communities, Governor Noem’s confirmation as Secretary of Homeland Security appears imminent.
